Over the weekend, Gov’t Mule kicked off their Island Exodus destination concert event at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway, Jamaica. Yesterday, the band invited longtime collaborator and saxophonist Ron Holloway to join in on a few songs during the second set.

Set one began with Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” followed by a reggae rendition of “Back in the Saddle,” a nod to the band’s surroundings.

Midway through the first set, Gov’t Mule performed a jam featuring songs from their 2021 LP, Heavy Load Blues, “Snatch It Back and Hold It” segue into “Hold It Back,” followed by a return to “Snatch It Back and Hold It.”

The set continued with “Wake Up Dead” and “Make It Rain,” both tunes were featured on Heavy Load Blues. The first set concluded with a super-jam of “Trane,” “Rumble,” “Sex Machine,” “Slow Devil,” and “Devil Likes It Slow,” and finally a performance of “32/20 Blues.”

The second set began with a jam of “Game Face,” which segued into “Mt. Jam” and finished with “Game Face” reprised. Next, the gang performed “Banks Of The Deep End” off their fourth studio album, The Deep End, Volume 1. Gov’t Mule then performed a jam of  “My Separate Reality” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked Her For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)” into “Machine Gun” and returned to “I Asked Her For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)” once more.

Things heated up during “Doing It To Death” when Holloway joined the band on saxophone. The longtime Gov’t Mule collaborator stuck around for “Feel Like Breaking Up Someone’s Home.”

To end the evening, the band performed a cover of ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and ended with Holloway returning to the stage for The Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar.”

Yesterday’s Gov’t Mule set at Island Exodus was canceled due to inclement weather. The band is expected to return to the stage today.
