A collection of rare Lou Reed demos were released on Apple Music in Europe on Christmas eve and then quickly removed in what seems like a copyright dump.

Sound recordings are protected for 50 years after they are published but this timeframe can be extended to 70 years so long as the tracks are lawfully communicated to the public within the first 50 years. The short-lasting release, which has become a common tactic in recent years, was done by RCA/Song Music who have ownership of the recordings.

The demos–now removed–were titled I’m So Free: The 1971 RCA Demos and featured 17-tracks including rough tracks from Reed’s self-titled solo debut LP and songs like “Perfect Day,” “Ride Into The Sun” and more.

Matthew Goody, the author of Needles And Plastic: Flying Nun Records, 1981–1988, pointed out that the LP had been released on Twitter.
