Last night, Dead & Company played at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a location famous for being the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair. The band played an array of Grateful Dead covers but also did something special for this leg of their tour: they played the entirety of the Dead’s set at Woodstock.
The band opened their first set with “Hell in a Bucket” then “Easy Wind” which featured John Mayer on vocals. Next Bobby Weir took over the mic for Jerry Garcia’s track “Loser.” The two went back and forth on lead vocals until they closed the set with “Lost Sailor” into “Saint of Circumstance.”
The second set marked the start of their recreation of the Grateful Dead’s performance at Woodstock in 1969. They opened with “St. Stephen.” into Merle Haggard’s track “Mama Tried,” into “Dark Star,” into “High Time,” then into a cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light” to complete the recreation. However, Dead & Company weren’t done yet. They continued jamming with “Drums” > “Space” > “Deal.” They closed the second set with a reprise of “Turn On Your Love Light” to bookend their new imprint on the famously muddy land. They encored with “Ripple.”
This is not the first time a member of the Dead paid tribute to the Dead’s set at Woodstock: In 2006, Phil Lesh & Friends with special guest Trey Anastasio also played their 1969 setlist in its entirety.

August 25, 2021 at 5:59 pmWell said Chuck. Furthur 2012 at Bethel was truly special. Chimenti is god in all things GD. Don’t know how 99% of the audience is fooled nightly but if you made the effort to get there and shelled out the $100’s, I imagine there is a huge expectation bias automatically built in.

August 25, 2021 at 11:28 amAs a veteran of quite a number of Dead and spinoff shows, I can honestly say this was easily one of the worst shows I’ve ever been to. The homage to the original Woodstock set was ill-conceived and poorly executed. The energy level was non-existent. The pace of the show was awful, and dragged interminably. On the plus side, Bobby was in surprisingly good voice, and Jeff Chimenti was outstanding. John Mayer channeled Jerry quite well at times, although vocally and musically he was pushed to the background, as this was Bobby’s show. As this may be the last time I will get to see the boys live, it was certainly a bad way to go out. Especially on the hallowed ground of Woodstock.

August 24, 2021 at 11:39 pmSure Looks and sounds like these guys are having some fun…the Philly show a couple nights ago was insane and then this nugget.
It ain’t easy going on the road these days…I love this band and Weir is, once again, heroic.

August 24, 2021 at 11:28 pmThis was a phenomenal show. Great weather, great crowd, great venue. The band is tight! I have seen D&Co. 7 times. I really believe this was the best show I’ve seen. The jam before the intermission entered the realm of elation infrequently experienced at anytime anywhere. Truly excellent. See you in Hershey.

August 24, 2021 at 3:58 pmWoodstock in ’69 is not remembered as one of The Dead’s good nights. Equipment problems. It was good to hear that set again and this was a good night- sounded better than the original. Great show. Great venue. A splendid time was had by all.

August 24, 2021 at 2:14 pmWhat were they teasing during Space? It was jazzy in a lounge crooner sort of way. They teased this all the way to the start of Deal.
