Last night, Dead & Company kicked off their Summer tour in Raleigh, N.C. marking the first of their 31 show run that will go on until Halloween. The entire tour will be available to stream and watch live from the comfort of your couch.
They started their show at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek with “Touch of Grey” allowing fans to settle in through the song’s hook, “It’s alright/ we will get by/ we will survive.” They then played a segment of classics, with “Shakedown Street” into “Deal” into “Tennessee Jed.” They closed their first set with “New Speedway Boogie.”
Their second set was flush with surprises, solidifying the first show of the tour as a special celebration for not just fans but also the band. They played one song into the next with no breaks throughout, starting with “Playing in the Band.”
Dead & Company played Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful” for the first time since 2017 and for the second time ever, along with a bunch of classics from their repertoire throughout the continuous jam including, “Truckin'”, “The Wheel” and “Slipknot!” They also played a cover of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy,” which marked the first time Bob Weir has played it live since 2015. They closed the night with “Not Fade Away.”
Watch a preview of the first song of the show below.

August 20, 2021 at 12:28 pmTake it for what it is, nostalgia. The band needs to kill its carbon footprint and just park itself at Caesar’s palace. It’s a bluesy lounge act now with a lot of power. The lead guitarist drove this band from the get go to the stratosphere. That is no longer the case. It’s an old time sing a long now.
Still Groovin'
August 19, 2021 at 9:06 amGoing to see a few of their local shows as well as some other old guys soon – Jorma still kicks ass at 80, and King Crimson’s current lineup is a force to behold!
Happy man
August 18, 2021 at 7:14 pmDon’t get it, it’s all nostalgia, enjoy it for what it is…if you don’t dig it, stay home…yeah they get paid, that’s why they continue to tour…me? I’m not going but I’m not going to blast people for enjoying this…

August 18, 2021 at 5:42 pmnothing negative from me but why can’t they make new music? Lets face it most GD songs have been played out. 1.5 years of not touring and no new music?

August 18, 2021 at 3:21 pmYou had to be there at the right time. This is clearly not the right time. The Grateful Dead were once young a long time ago. If people will pay Bobby will play. And why not if it still brings joy to so many. The Dead are old but I don’t doubt they still love playing for any reason.

August 18, 2021 at 10:58 amYou are correct- I don’t have to listen to this music. I don’t have to pay the $ to see them. I don’t have to waste my energy commenting on them.
BUT….. I feel compelled to tell all of you nerds that this music sucks, and therefore you suck for lapping it up like the custy shits you are. Wake up! You’re embarrassing yourselves. Remember when we used to dance to the Grateful Dead? Now the crowd just sways, sits down, or holds on to the rail like a bunch of zombies. I’m just glad Oteil is finally getting a paycheck.

August 17, 2021 at 6:45 pmThe old Deadheads have the money. It’s the young heads being fleeced. There’s nothing there Truman, it’s all been discovered.

August 17, 2021 at 7:41 pmPhil helped made Furthur authentic and great. He certainly wasn’t done in late 2013 when he took $happy’s ransom money to hold the rest of Furthur hostage for a year then dismissed the rest of the band. Only to take another phony payday a few months later with the FTW farce… Tomorrow ain’t going to fare better.

August 17, 2021 at 5:53 pmMe too! Cap theater Thursday April April 25, 2013. 2 nights later he was fine in AC, one of the best shows ever. (Between you & I, I think it was a little more than booze…)
SIDESHOW MEL
August 17, 2021 at 5:20 pmFurthur was the best and most of use didn’t realize it. Authentic music, reasonably priced tickets and venues. This corporately produced watered down stadium nostalgia act blows and simply exists to tricked the aged deadheads out of their retirement money…

August 17, 2021 at 5:00 pmI don’t see this band ever. But I loved the old band. I do buy a tee from time to time though. 50- for a lawn seat seems reasonable. The wealthy go to the loose Lucy lounge. Everything caters to class now. Are you a lawn person or a loose Lucy ? I bet the majority of you are lawn people. Happy lawn people.

August 17, 2021 at 4:28 pmGeez. So many people dissing this band. “I wish they were all dead”? Really? It’s music for god’s sake. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. Nobody’s forcing anyone to go to shows, and if you hate them or wish any of them harm why don’t you go crawl back into whatever hole you came out of. I’ve had some of the best times of my life with the dead; I first saw them live in 1972, and many times since. Do I wish Jerry were still around? You bet; but I think Dead and Company are a pretty good band, and really, who has more of a right to play this music than some of the original members? As with a lot of things on the web, you can be an anonymous presence and say any shit you want. Spineless and cowardly. Get a life.

August 17, 2021 at 4:22 pmHaha…you guys make me laugh. This is still as good as it will get for me this summer. I will gladly spend 50 for a lawn seat.

August 17, 2021 at 3:25 pmYour telling me Bobby, Mickey and Bill are making 12 million apiece on this tour, that’s what your telling me ? I remember a time when everyone was having nothing but fun and they probably didn’t make 12 thousand a tour. Something is very wrong with this picture. How much are these tickets going for now ?
Marquino
August 17, 2021 at 3:36 pmThey’re going for far too much due to Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing” policy. This has got to be illegal since they and their owner, Live Nation, have a monopoly on the large tours. We need to organize to end this. Class action suit?

August 17, 2021 at 3:17 pmI need a Bobby chia pet with beard, Can you help me ? Jerry would have shared the money equally.

August 17, 2021 at 3:11 pmSad to see such sophomoric, hateful comments about a band that has promoted nothing but peace, fun, and love since the very first days. These guys have more stage time than about any people on Earth and they know what they are doing. I’d like to see these naysayers jam like this at 73 years of age, every other night lol. Just for the record, there are several misleading articles about the band changing their vaccination requirements after the point of sale, which is untrue. I bought tickets on the very first hour they were available and it clearly stated proof of vaccination would be required. So all the people flipping out about not being told are were just not paying attention or used to pre-covid gatherings only. We adapt and learn and do the best we can, and that is exactly what the band and the venue did to accomodate the tour.

August 17, 2021 at 7:19 pmJust because they’re old doesn’t mean they’re good…This is nothing more than a Grateful Dead cover band… and not a very good one… the kool-aid wore off…

August 17, 2021 at 2:55 pmI know for a FACT that Bill, Bob and Mickey take in $403,000 PER SHOW A PIECE.
Mayer gets a little less.
Oteil and Jeff get scale.
Multiply by 31 shows.
Still wondering why?

August 17, 2021 at 2:32 pmIt saddens me that former members of the Grateful Dead can not realize that their concert tour will lead to community spread of the Delta variant and its dire consequences.
