On Saturday, Feb. 19, vocalist/trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick dropped by Big Room Studios – the home studio of Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss – for a special pay-per-view “One Night Affair.”
The duo showcased a slew of covers for the single set livestream, from an opening version of the Derek and the Dominos classic “Bell Bottom Blues” to the following take on Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”.
From there, Phish and T.A.B. fans were thrilled to hear a “Lifeboy,” and Hartswick even added her horn to Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody.”
Later, Bayliss tickled the ivories on tunes like “It Makes No Difference” by The Band, “Holding Back The Years” by Simply Red (which also included Hartswick on trumpet) and “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?” by Prince.
After the evening’s sole UM tune “Bullhead City,” Bayliss’ wife Annie joined the pair, singing on Macy Gray’s hit “I Try, before the duo offered one of the set’s true highlights – the John Prine masterpiece “Angel From Montgomery.”
The closing trio of Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie,” Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” further exemplified the evening’s wide swath of inspiration.
