According to legislation passed on Monday, Nov. 2, late soul-singing powerhouse Sharon Jones will be honored with her own namesake amphitheater North Augusta, S.C.
While Jones was born in Augusta, Ga., she spend many formative years in the South Carolina city, according to a Rolling Stone report. The riveting frontwoman for The Dap-Kings passed away in 2016 after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Explained her friend Don Rhodes, speaking to the North Augusta City Council, “Sharon loved North Augusta, I can’t tell you how much. She loved the area and when she was here, this was her refuge. She loved coming back here. She liked life being a star around the world. She went to all the major cities of the world. She sold out – she sold out the Apollo Theater three times, but she loved coming back here because she could be herself.”
According to The North Augusta Star, the “600-seat amphitheater that now bears Jones’ name is located off Center Street near the SRP Park baseball stadium.”

It’s not the best part of either state. it’s nice to pay homage to Sharon Jones, however. love to see memorial auditoriums…instead of some cell phone/cable company name on the ‘marquee’

November 3, 2020 at 2:26 pmInteresting on several levels, including that North Augusta is in South Carolina. (I’ve lived in Augusta, and my brother was born in North Augusta.) If she was born in one and the amphitheater’s there, interesting to note that she loves the other. 🙂
