The Grateful Dead has announced a new box set release, June ’76. The box set will include five previously unreleased full shows from the Dead’s 1976 return tour.

The included shows will be June 10 and 11, 1976 at the Boston Music Hall, June 14 and 15 from New York City’s Beacon Thatre and June 19, 1976 at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, N.J.

The Grateful Dead’s 1976 summer tour, during which these shows occurred, marked their return to the stage after a two-year hiatus. The hiatus began after their Oct. 20, 1974 performance at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco (footage of which appears in The Grateful Dead Movie).

According to a press release, “the featured recordings were sourced from the master two-track tapes made by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the band’s legendary live recording engineer for many years. They have been mastered in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman for extraordinary sound quality, with restoration and speed correction by Plangent Processes.” Additionally, Relix contributing editor Jesse Jarnow wrote the liner notes for the release.

“At the height of my tape trading days in the late 1980s, arriving in my mailbox one day was a package containing cassettes of four of the five shows in this box (the four shows from Boston and New York). I’d never heard anything like these recordings,” said Grateful Dead archivist (and box set producer) David Lemieux via a press release. “The performances were magnificent, A+ Dead throughout, and the recordings were impeccable, crystal clear with a clarity to each instrument and vocal that was unlike any other tapes in my collection.”

Additionally, via Rolling Stone, the Dead released a sneak preview of the music on these discs: a nine-minute version of “Friend of the Devil,” from the June 15 show at the Beacon Theatre. Listen here.

The box set is available to order from Dead.net. Digital versions of the box set will also be made available for purchase. Check out the setlists from the included shows below! In addition, check out Lemieux himself discussing the June 1976 box set in a video just released by the Dead HQ.
