Colorado’s ARISE Music Festival returned to Sunrise Ranch in Loveland this past weekend, and two of the fest’s biggest string-fueled acts used the gathering as an opportunity to collaborate during their sets on Friday evening.

Before the sit ins got started, Fruition’s Jay Cobb Anderson and singer-songwriter John Craigie hosted a tribute to the late Tom Petty, featuring Fruition as the house “Heartbreakers” band while Anderson, Craigie and Brad Parsons took turns in the frontman slot, along with vocal additions from Fruition’s Mimi Naja and Kellen Asebroek. The set included Petty classics like “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” “American Girl,” “Wildflowers,” “Breakdown,” “The Waiting,” “Free Fallin’,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and closer “You Wreck Me.”

Leftover Salmon then took the stage for an acoustic “Living Room” set, which featured Naja, Anderson and Asebroek on “Liza” and “Easy Chair,” which preceded an a cappella version of Vince Herman’s “420 Song.” Before Salmon’s second, electric set, Fruition offered their own performance (originally billed on the ARISE lineup as a “mystery band”), which saw the band welcome Elephant Revival’s Bridget Law for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do” and “The Meaning” before bringing out Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman, Andy Thorn and Erik Deutsch, plus Silas Herman, for an energetic, set-closing “Fire.” Watch a video of that collaboration below, via photographer C. Allan Crandall.

Finally, Leftover Salmon’s electric set rounded out the cross-band collaborations with a two-song sit in from Naja, Law and Colorado singer-songwriter Daniel Rodriguez, all of which joined Salmon for “What is Time?” and “Piece of My Heart.”
