Bassist George Porter Jr. hosted a show with some “Phunky Friends” at The Mint in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, and the performance turned into a tribute to late keyboardist Art Neville, who passed away at the age of 81 earlier this week. Neville and Porter co-founded legendary New Orleans funk group The Meters.

Last night’s late-night set also featured Art’s son, guitarist Ian Neville, along with Art’s nephew and Ian’s Dumpstaphunk band mate, Ivan Neville, plus Dumpstaphunk guitarist/bassist Tony Hall and two regular George Porter Trio members, keyboardist Mike Lemmler and drummer Terrence Houston.

In a video of a portion of the performance streamed live to Porter’s Facebook page, the collective honors Art Neville by running through some Meters classics, starting with an extended take on “I Need More Time” and continuing with “Soul Island,” “Cissy Strut,” “Doodle Loop (The World Is a Little Bit Under the Weather),” “Funky Miracle” and more.
