Sturgill Simpson has announced he will return with a new studio album, Sound & Fury, this fall via Elektra Records, along with the surprising news that the record will accompany a new Japanese anime film of the same name, set for release on Netflix with the album.
The Sound & Fury film is based on a story by Simpson and will exclusively feature music from the singer-songwriter, who won a Grammy for Best Country Album for his previously studio effort, 2016’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (which was also nominated for Album of the Year). Simpson teamed up with writer/director Jumpei Mizusaki and character designer Takashi Okazaki for Sound & Fury.
“We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock n roll record,” Simpson says in a press release. “It’s definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest. I had this idea that it’d be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film.”
Simpson also recently released the new track “The Dead Don’t Die,” the theme song for Jim Jarmusch’s film of the same name, which was released last month. Below, listen to that song and watch the trailer for Netflix’s Sound & Fury.

July 22, 2019 at 2:45 pmSturgill, Chris Stapleton, and Jason Isbell are the strongest songwriters/performers in country these days. I love that they all cross over to the pop/rock world. I saw Stapleton play a sod-out L.A. Forum last year and the number of younger people there was heartwarming. Great show, too. Will definitely see him again.
