Soulive return to the Brooklyn Bowl stage tonight to continue Bowlive VIII, and the venue has released the second and final part of its new documentary mini-series, The Bowlive Story. Titled “The Revue,” part two dives into some of the specific guests that have performed with Soulive over the years since Bowlive I in 2010.

“There’s something about that kind of kinetic state of energy,” says keyboardist Neal Evans when talking about how the guest-filled, multi-night runs at the Bowl progress from the first to the last night. “And when it’s released, it’s magical.”

The documentary then goes into the many, many guests that Bowlive has hosted, with each member of the band and Brooklyn Bowl co-founders Peter Shapiro and Charley Ryan trying to recall as many as they can. Guitarist Eric Krasno even says that he could “write a book” on the various experiences he’s had at Bowlive.

Shapiro echoes the sentiment in his own way, joking, “I have so many memories…that I don’t remember.”

After listing dozens of past guests (and likely not even hitting them all), Soulive dig into a few special memories, starting with Krasno and drummer Alan Evans recalling playing with late keyboardist Bernie Worrell, who was a part of both Parliament Funkadelic as well as Talking Heads and passed away in 2016. The film includes video of Worrell starting off a cover of P-Funk’s “Flashlight” as the Soulive members remember being awed at seeing the iconic musician play his own tune.

The band also discusses playing with “The King of Bowlive,” the legendary Meters bassist George Porter Jr. “In terms of soul music and funk, there’s James Brown, and then you have The Meters,” Neal says. “Those people changed the way people play instruments.”

“We’re just lucky to be a part of that greatness when it’s going down,” Alan adds.

Soulive, Shapiro and Ryan then get into how Bowlive can bring people together to enjoy disparate music—from Run DMC to John Scofield—and how special and different the different nights of Bowlive can be.

“It became something where, yes, we had certain things planed,” Krasno reflects, “but the magic was in what wasn’t planned. It’s about creating a unique experience.”

Watch part two of The Bowlive Story below, along with part one, “The Genesis.” Bowlive VIII returns tonight with special guest guitarist Marcus King and continues tomorrow with Porter and on Saturday with a group of longtime Soulive/Bowlive collaborators. Tickets are available here.
