Gov’t Mule continued their European tour on Saturday, June 8, with an appearance at the Ribs & Blues Festival in the Netherlands.

After opening with “Hammer and Nails,” the highlight of Mule’s single set came with the surprise appearance of Blackberry Smoke singer-guitarist Charlie Starr, who jammed with the band on the Allman Brothers classic “Blue Sky.”

While his connection to the ABB doesn’t run as deep as that of Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes, Starr performed with the late Gregg Allman in 2016 in the ABB’s hometown of Macon, Ga. and later invited the keyboardist to perform on their Like An Arrow cut “Free on the Wing.”

“I get goosebumps thinking about it,” Starr told Relix of his time with the late rock legend. “I’ll never forget that as long as I live.”

Additionally, Starr has jammed with Gov’t Mule quite a few times, in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

After Starr’s sit in, Gov’t Mule continued on with “Stone Cold Rage,” “Time To Confess,” and a set-closing “Soulshine.”
