Dave Matthews Band descended upon the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Saturday, May 4, inviting a group of friends to join the party, including Robert Randolph, Warren Haynes and the city’s own Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

The show started off with the full DMB lineup digging into “What Would You Say,” “Anyone Seen The Bridge”> “Too Much” and “Warehouse.”

Sacred steel master Robert Randolph jumped onstage for an upbeat “Louisana Bayou,” paying homage to Jazz Fest’s home state. As many DMB fans know Randolph is a regular collaborator with the band, appearing at upwards of 40 DMB gigs through his career. His most recent sit-in was in July 2018, in Holmdel, NJ.

From there, Matthews and company played the first of their newer Come Tomorrow cuts, “That Girl Is You,” with additional instrumentation by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (namely Ben Jaffe, Branden Lewis, Charlie Gabriel, Clint Maedgen, Kyle Roussel, Ronell Johnson and Walter Harris).

Following a number of fan favorites like “Don’t Drink The Water,” “#41” and “Funny The Way It Is,” DMB invited Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes to add his Les Paul to “Tripping Billies.” Warren, too, is a common sight at DMB gigs, sitting in with the band as recently as November 2018 at Madison Square Garden (Haynes and Matthews also traded sit ins in Mexico this past February).

Later, after a funk-filled “Jimi Thing> Sexy M.F.” segment, Matthews invited Preservation Hall Jazz Band up for one last get-down, rocking out to “Ants Marching.” (Pres. Hall performed the same tune with the band on December 15, 2018 in DMB’s hometown of Charlottesville, Va.)

DMB closed their massive Jazz Fest showing with their version of “All Along The Watchtower.”
