Band marketing and brand marketing have finally entered the 21st century thanks to a new agreement struck by Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre and Baltimore-based quartet Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Through this new arrangement, the funk-jammers will change their name for a 21 month period to honor the Capitol Theatre squirrel mascot. As of today, April 1, 2019, through December 31, 2020, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will become known as Squirrels Splaying Sing Song.

While most musicians have expressed support for the group’s innovative efforts to monetize their name, a few have raised questions. “I understand we’re in another era now that the NBA finally allows teams to sell uniform patches. Still, while I respect their pizazz, I have to ask: what does Squirrels Splaying Sing Song even mean?” queried Brendan Bayliss, co-founder of Umphrey’s McGee.

In response, a band representative offered, “Sure, some may say Squirrels Splaying Sing Song lacks the clarity and gravitas of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. No arguments there. But if you think about it, every band name is shrouded in mystery. I mean, Tedeschi Trucks Band, I still can’t figure that one out.”
