Still grieving from the loss of multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge, the Tedeschi Trucks Band played a cover-heavy show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Wednesday night.
The band opened with a heavy-hearted version of Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces,” and followed with the first track of their new LP Signs. The band later noted on Instagram that the album’s opener is closely tied to their late bandmate.
“Our brother Kofi is with us in many ways tonight,” they said. “His clav is the first sound you hear on SIGNS and his contributions to TTB’s music are truly immeasurable.”
Flowers also peppered the BAM stage on Wednesday night, and a painting of Burbridge (by artist Madalyn Stefanak) leaned against Derek Trucks’ amplifier. Keyboardist Gabe Dixon – who the band called on during Burbridge’s medical leave – filled in on keys once again.
Later, the band nodded to Burbridge once more with a version of Elmore James’ “The Sky is Crying,” and closed the first set with their Made Up Mind track “Idle Wind.”
Set two kicked off with the Allman Brothers Band’s “Don’t Keep Me Wondering.” From there, TTB jammed their own “Don’t Know What It Means” into a cover of Box Tops’ “The Letter.” Another cover – Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on a Wire” – followed.
TTB then offered up a pairing of “Walk Through This Life” and “Shame,” both off Signs, before playing their fan favorite “Midnight in Harlem.”
TTB’s second set ended with a jam through “Leaving Truck” (Sleepy John Estes) and “Volunteered Slavery” (Rahsaan Roland Kirk) before they closed with Joe Tex’s “Show Me.”

February 22, 2019 at 5:41 amTTB is by far.. in my opinion a top notch act. The diversity and attention to every minute detail is that of true artistic genius. Kofi is smiling from the heavens and he is with you ALL.
Amen and thank you for your artistic expressions.

February 22, 2019 at 9:47 amFurthermore, the fact that they are sucking it up and playing great show after great show after what just happened makes your comment even further in poor taste frankly
