Gov’t Mule played their final Island Exodus show on Wednesday, Jan. 23, offering two sets of special guests and even a brief solo offering by Warren Haynes.

The show kicked off with Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,” and the band continued the covers with Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.” The first Mule original came with “Life Before Insanity,” followed by a down-and-dirty “Game Face” to get the crowd in the groove. Later, the band closed set one with “Revolution Come, Revolution Go,” the title track off their most recent studio LP.

The second half began with High & Mighty cut “Million Miles From Yesterday,” featuring The Better Half singers on additional vocals. From there, the Better Half Singers stuck around to amplify Mule’s “Dreams & Songs” as well as Van Morrison’s “Ballerina.” The latter tune also featured tenor saxophonist Ron Halloway, who sat in for quite a few tunes with Mule over Island Exodus 10.

Then, most of the musicians left the stage for Haynes to perform a stripped-down version of James Taylor’s “That’s Why I’m Here.” However, the mood quickly lifted with a reggae take on the classic Allman Brothers tune “Soulshine.” That island-infused cover then gave way to a nice “Effigy”> “Folsom Prison Blues”> “Effigy”> “St. Stephen” jam.

Mule’s set closed with a pairing of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels” (featuring Holloway and Devon Allman) and ABB’s “Jessica” (featuring R. Scott Bryan and Duane Betts).

After a quick applause break, Gov’t Mule served up a double encore, first with Robert Johnson’s “32/20 Blues” featuring Ron Holloway, R. Scott Bryan and Johnny Stachela and second with a double dose of Pearl Jam’s “Come Back” with Holloway and, finally, with Grand Funk Railroad’s “Sin’s A Good Man’s Brother.”
