God Street Wine keyboardist Jon Bevo recently shared a new song he composed and performed with his daughter, along with a note explaining that the tune was inspired by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the California psychology professor who testified against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

“My daughter and I wrote this song after watching the Christine Blasey Ford testimony and its outcome,” Bevo writes about the song, called “Fifteen For Life.” “With two teenage daughters questioning how something like this could happen—there was really nothing I could say that could have any meaning. The generations before them blew it in so many ways. Maybe the ball was dropped prior to my generation, but still we just watched (and keep watching) it roll farther away.

“My daughter gave me a bday gift a while back for us to do another song together, and this is what we came up with,” Bevo continues. “It’s definitely outside my jamband comfort zone, inspired by younger artists like Billie Eilish and Alessia Cara. I’m not so sure I pulled it off, but hope you listen. And I do look forward to watching the confident and powerful young women of today continue to raise their voices and actions and get things moving in the right direction. If anyone can do it—they can.”

“My daughter and I wrote this song after watching the Christine Blasey Ford testimony and it’s outcome.  With two teenage daughters questioning how something like this could happen — there was really nothing I could say that could have any meaning.  The generations before them blew it in so many ways.  Maybe the ball was dropped prior to my generation, but  still we just watched (and keep watching) it roll farther away.

This song is about a few minutes of time.  In one person’s eyes it’s just a funny story about some girl at the beach house to tell to your frat brothers back at school.  To the other person, it’s a slice of time that cuts their life into a distinct before and after.  A line so deep that the person on the other side may as well be a stranger.  And then, to have to watch that person, the one who did that to you, rise to an ultimate level of power and privilege… it must be nothing short of devastating.

Thank you Christine Blasey Ford, for teaching my daughters, my son, and myself, so much through your actions.  Please know that many, many people did hear you.

My daughter gave me a bday gift a while back for us to do another song together, and this is what we came up with.  It’s definitely outside my jamband comfort zone, inspired by younger artists like Billie Eilish and Alessia Cara.  I’m not so sure I pulled it off, but hope you listen.

And I do look forward to watching the confident and powerful young women of today continue to raise their voices and actions and get things moving in the right direction.   If anyone can do it — they can.”
