Yo La Tengo wrapped up their traditional eight-night Hanukkah run on Sunday night, marking then end of the holiday at New York’s Bowery Ballroom with a guest-filled performance that saw the band welcome members of opening act Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, The Fugs’ Peter Stampfel, Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn and more. The show also confirmed that YLT’s made the full eight nights without a single repeated song.

The evening opened with a comedy set from Todd Barry, followed by music from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (the Canadian outfit may be best known for their song “Having an Average Weekend,” which was used at the theme song to popular sketch comedy television show Kids in the Hall). YLT then took the stage and didn’t waste much time in getting the sit ins started, continuing their collaborative holiday tradition by welcoming members of SMOASP for a few tunes including Lesley Gore’s ’60s hit “You Don’t Own Me.”

Next up was Peter Stampfel from long-running psych-folk act Holy Modal Rounders, who was also a member of pre-punk NYC outfit The Fugs. Stampfell added his fiddle and vocals to a number of songs on the night, including a couple more ’60s tunes, a cover of The Left Banke’s classic “Walk Away Renée” and The Fugs’ own “New Amphetamine Shriek.” YLT’s set would later round out with their cover of Big Star’s “Take Care.”

Last night’s final encore once again featured some special guests, starting with Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn, who fronted the group on a couple of his band’s tunes, “That’s What You Always Say” and “Glide,” before SMOASP organist Dallas Good added to the collective on Bob Dylan’s “Apple Suckling Tree.” After another Dream Syndicate song, “The Days of Wine and Roses,” Stampfell returned to the stage along with Marilyn Kaplan (mother of YLT’s Ira Kaplan) for a cover of Holy Modal Rounders’ version of “Antonia.” The night then wrapped up as all of YLT’s Hanukkah runs have, with Marilyn leading a closing run of “My Little Corner of the World.”
