Yo La Tengo continued their traditional, guest-filled Hanukkah run on Friday night, returning to New York’s Bowery Ballroom for the sixth of eight straight shows at the venue. The night opened with sets from comedian David Cross (who performed as Rabbi Alan Sugarman) and Brooklyn outfit Oneida, whose set featured YLT bassist James McNew throughout, plus a couple guest spots from his bandmates Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley.

For their main set, Yo La Tengo welcomed the members of Oneida—Baby Jane, Showtime, Kid Millions, Bobby Matador and Snaps London—for the entire performance, then returned to the stage for more surprises during the encore.

The six-song closing act of the night kicked off with Cross joining YLT for “To Sir, With Love,” followed by a trio of Ramones covers (YLT traditionally include songs by Jewish songwriters during their Hanukkah-run encores, and Joey and Tommy Ramone fall into that category), starting with “Swallow My Pride” and “Pet Sematary,” the second of which featured guest vocals from Clay Pigeon. The final surprise of the night came with the third Ramones tune, “Don’t Come Close,” for which YLT enlisted singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten. Van Etten then stuck around for her own song “One Day,” then helped YLT close out the night with the Fred Neil-penned “The Dolphins.”
