Phish continued their fall tour at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, TN, on Tuesday, kicking off their first of two nights at the venue with a rare “Tweezer Reprise” opener and continuing their solid string of shows dating back to this summer’s tour.

After somewhat subverting expectations on Sunday night in Virginia with a double encore that didn’t include the expected “Tweeprise,” Phish finally acquiesced in a very Phish way by instead placing the tune at the head of the first set for the first time since June 19, 2010 in Saratoga Springs, NY. (The band also played “Tweeprise” during the encore of that performance, and more recently they surprised fans with a second-set opener of the tune at Merriweather Post Pavilion earlier this year).

Last night’s “Tweeprise” was followed up by “Party Time,” and Phish kept the high spirits going with “Free” and a run of the bluegrass tune “The Old Home Place.” Page McConnell then took to the mic for a quick “Lawn Boy,” which was followed by just the eighth “Cool It Down” ever played by the band. The Velvet Underground cover was last played in August 2012. The eclectic first set continued with “Theme from the Bottom” and “Funky Bitch,” plus a couple of first-set staples in “Kill Devil Falls” and “Wolfman’s Brother” before Phish rounded out the set with “Character Zero.”

Set two got off to an impressive start with a one-two rocking, funky punch of “Mike’s Song” (which extended into a welcome second jam section) and “Ghost,” followed by “Everything’s Right” and a patient, sometimes jubilant “Set Your Soul Free.” The first “When the Circus Comes to Town” of 2018 and an energetic “Weekapaug Groove” closed out the second set, before Phish returned to the stage for an encore favorite, their cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.”
