Mandolin Orange—the North Carolina-based duo of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz—will release their new album, Tides of a Teardrop, on February 1, 2019, via Yep Roc, marking their sixth record and first new release since 2016.
Today, NPR premiered the lead single from the new effort, the closing track “Time We Made Time,” which can be heard below. On the inspiration behind the new song, Marlin tells NPR, “”I was toying with the idea of repressed emotion as a river that keeps swelling and swelling and eventually either running itself out or carrying you with it. It can be very satisfying to give into the rage and destructive power of it, and I think this recording captures that feeling very well.”
Marlin also points out in a press release that the new record’s songs also came from thoughts of his late mother, who passed away when Marlin was 18 years old. “I think her passing was almost the genesis of my writing,” he says. “That was when I really began to find refuge in writing songs.”
