Gov’t Mule returned to Runaway Bay Jamaica this past weekend to host the ninth iteration of their Island Exodus destination concert event, and the band played their third and final two-set performance last night, capping off a run of shows that saw them welcome several guests, with a Warren Haynes solo set for good measure.

On Saturday evening, Mule kicked off Island Exodus with a guest-less first set that featured jams on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen,” and the second set opened up the parade of sit ins with the band’s Island Exodus special guests guitarist Audley Freed and saxophonist Ron Holloway, plus Jen Gunderman and The Better Half Singers, all of whom all combined to help out on tunes like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” Neil Young’s “Southern Man” and an encore of The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar.”

Night two brought even more guests, with Freed, Holloway and The Better Half Singers returning, along with sit ins from Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist Rob Barraco, John Molo, Barry Sless, Pete Sears and Katie Skene throughout the two sets, which featured covers like Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” and Dead cuts like “Shakedown Street” and “Morning Dew.” A collaborative encore saw Mule joined by Freed, Holloway, JJ Grey, Todd Smallie, Eric Mason, Marcus Parsley, Dennis Marion and The Better Half Singers for Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey” and The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek.”

After a Monday set from Haynes, who offered some of his solo cuts and covers with guest spots from Holloway, Barraco, Freed, Eric Mason and Danny Louis, Mule returned last night for their third two-set affair, which kicked off with another guest-free first set that featured the band’s live debut of “Girl With No Self-Esteem.” Set two brought back a few of the key guests from the run, Holloway, Freed and The Better Half Singers, with Freed and Holloway helping Mule round out their destination event with a second-set closer of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post” and the encore-closer of “Key to the Highway.”
