Legendary guitarist John McLaughlin has announced a co-tour with Widespread Panic’s Jimmy Herring for what is being dubbed as ‘The Meeting of the Spirits’ tour, named after a song from McLaughlin’s iconic Mahavishnu Orchestra, whose material will feature heavily throughout the tour. The dates will also mark McLaughlin’s farewell US tour.

McLaughlin will be backed by his current band, the 4th Dimension, which features Ranjit Barot on drums, Gary Husband on keyboards and drums and Etienne M’Bappé on bass, while Herring will be joined by his new band, The Invisible Whip, which features Jeff Sipe, Jason Crosby, Matt Slocum and Kevin Scott. Each night of the tour, which will take place throughout November and December, McLaughlin and Herring will each play a full set before joining forces to explore the material of Mahavishnu Orchestra together.

“To play the music of Mahavishnu is not for the faint-hearted,” says McLaughlin, who says that this tour will probably be his last run in America. “In fact, among the only people I know who have succeeded in interpreting Mahavishnu music are my two all-time favorite guitarists: Jimmy Herring and Jeff Beck. Jimmy is simply a great guitar player, and since we see so eye to eye in music, I know we will have some extraordinary musical experiences touring together.”

McLaughlin is also expected to release a new album before the tour begins on November 1. See the full schedule below.
