Bootsy Collins as an InstrumentHead
A special photography exhibit dubbed “InstrumentHead” is currently on display in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The display features a quirky series of musician portraits by longtime Relix photographer Michael Weintrob that captures iconic New Orleans, world and Grammy-winning artists. The portraits never show the musicians’ faces and instead each photograph shows the subject posing with their instruments in front of their heads. Among those included in the 75 images are Uncle Lionel Batiste, Mickey Hart, and members of Galactic, Dumpstaphunk and Rebirth Brass Band.
Each of the portraits will be sold as prints during Jazz Fest before the exhibit (and festival) ends on May 5, with 20% of the proceeds benefitting local New Orleans charities, the Tipitina’s Foundation and the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation.
Papa Mali, Eric McFadden (Parliament Funkadelic), Rob Mercurio (Galactic), Eric Bolivar (Anders Osborne), DJ Logic and Nigel Hall (Lettuce) performed at the exhibit’s grand opening on April 25. Other performances are scheduled at the pop-up gallery throughout Jazz Fest, including Will Bernard, London Souls and High & Mighty Brass Band. A full schedule of shows can be found below.
