Official Kansas City LE Poster by Sei Rey Ho at Us & Them
Phish’s 2012 Summer Tour made its way to the The Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, MO last night for the group’s first show in the Kansas area since 2003. In the first set, Phish dusted off the Little Feat’s “Skin It Back” for the second time this summer—the tune saw its return for the first time in 1,417 shows at Jones Beach on July 3—as well as the tour’s first version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Ballad of Curtis Loew.” Midway through the set, the group opened up a version of “Stash” with an extended jam that lasted nearly 15-minutes.
The second set began with “Tweezer,” and found its way into yet another 15-minute jam. Next up came a brief version of “Piper,” followed by a “Mike’s Groove” which sandwiched “Bouncing Around the Room,” “Backwards Down the Number Line” “Heavy Things,” and “If I Could” between “Mike’s Song” and “Weekapaug Groove.”
Things even got political during the “Suzy Greenberg” closer, when drummer Jon Fishman shouted “Todd Akin’s a neurologist,” referencing the Missouri senatorial candidate who recently voiced controversial opinions on rape and abortion. Also during the song, guitarist Trey Anastasio pulled one of his old tricks out of the bag when, at one point, he teased the solo from Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven.”
Phish heads to Oak Mountain in Alabama on Friday. The show will be webcast live via LivePhish.com.
