On Thursday evening, Deep Dive, a destination concert vacation put on by Umphrey’s McGee, kicked off at Moon Place in Cancún. During the event’s opening night, the host band delivered an hour-long set, billed as an Acoustic Singalong. The batch of songs leaned heavily into covers and kicked up a heap of rarities, including tracks from years past that served as deep cuts and bust-outs, as well as a debut of  4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?”

Stationed at the Beach Activities Hub, Umphrey’s McGee picked up a cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and positioned the piece as the frame’s jumping-off point. Next, they worked through their own “Nemo” prior to the evening’s first official bust-out, a revived take on the Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” performed for the first time since June 18, 2021, ending a 406-show gap.

Covers continued with a take on The Marshall Tucker Band classic, “Can’t You See,” which was preceded by the band’s debut of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” UM covered Sublime’s “Santeria,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience,” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” ahead of Bob Seger’s “Night Moves.” The latter was last played on April 24, 2015. Its arrival ended a more than decade-long pause in plays, which accounted for the closing of a 877-show gap.

The group provided a similar treatment to “The Joker.” The Steve Miller Band cover had been played by this group only once prior, during its Sept. 8, 2011, debut at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City, with the songwriter himself. Last night’s return ended a 1,282 concert lapse. Ultimately, for their final song, UM returned to originals on “Hajimemashite.”

The band will return to the festival stage tonight. For a full look at the Deep Dive schedule, follow this link: deepdiveumphreysmcgee.com/schedule
