Phil Lesh assembled a new incarnation of his Phil & Friends band for two public performances over the weekend. Joining him was stalwart drummer John Molo as well as recent band members Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch (Jerry Garcia Band) on vocals along with Barry Sless on guitar and pedal steel. Returning to P& F was Slesss fellow David Nelson Band member Mookie Siegel on keyboards. In addition, moe. guitarist Al Schnier who first performed with Lesh during the 1999 Summer Sessions Tour, joined in and even introduced his own song into the groups repertoire, a take on Mexico at the SEVA Foundation’s Wavy Gravy Birthday Bash on Sunday at the Berkeley Community Theater. Two nights earlier Schnier picked up an acoustic as the group debuted a cover of Phishs A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing. Other breakouts that night included ‘Across The Universe’ (John Lennon), ‘Hit The Road Jack’ (Percy Mayfield) and ‘Love The One You’re With’ (Stephen Stills) The SEVA benefit closed with a Turn On Your Lovelight encore that saw Wavy on stage with many of the nights participants.
