The Disco Biscuits returned from Amsterdam’s Jam in the Dam in full force this weekend, performing three tight, breakout-heavy shows at Sayreville, NJ’s Starland Ballroom. In addition to choice jam vehicles such as ‘Save the Robots,’ ‘Sound 1,’ ‘Munchkin Invasion’ and ‘Mindless Dribble,’ the Biscuits dipped into its canon, offering ‘Texas Pussy’ (last played 8/24/02), ‘The Devil’s Waltz’ (last played 8/16/03), ‘The Big Happy’ (last played 10/01/03) and ‘The Stone’ (last played 1/2/04). Several of the weekend’s most memorable numbers, including an apt ‘Eulogy,’ were played in tribute to Justin, a Biscuits fan who passed away earlier this year.
Though drummer Sam Altman’s future in the Disco Biscuits remains uncertain, his energy has reached new highs. At the start of the group’s second set on Saturday, Altman led his bandmates through a series of song teases, which touched upon ‘Jamillia’ and ‘Flog Legs’ before launching into ‘Mindless Dribble’ (Aron Magner described Altman as conducting his bandmates like ‘marionettes’). Magner added an exclamation mark to the run by playing his keyboard with his right foot at the end of ‘Texas Pussy,’ before jumping on—and subsequently collapsing—his rig ‘rock-star style’(no second encore that night!). At press time, the Disco Biscuits have no scheduled dates .
