On Wednesday Los Lobos made their way to Seattle for a gig with Steve Earle at the Woodland Park Zoo. The evening, which also marked the 70th birthday of Jerry Garcia, found the late musician on the minds of many in the facility. Earle took the stage first, opening with a cover of the Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon composition “Sittin’ on Top of the World” which the Grateful Dead performed early in their career (and appears on their self-titled debut album). Then, following an extended set, which drew on material that spanned Earle’s career, Los Lobos stepped on stage. Midway through their set, David Hidalgo acknowledged Garcia, observing, “You know, today is the big guy’s birthday. Jerry was really good to us. He was a big fan of Los Lobos.” Then the band delivered its take on the Garcia-Hunter composition “West LA Fadeway.” The night later ended as Steve Earle and his band joined Los Lobos for the encore which began with “She’s About A Mover” follwed by “La Bamba,” which segued into “Good Lovin’” and then back into “La Bamba.”
