This past Wednesday, The Marcus King Band headlined a big show in King’s current hometown at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. In advance of the gig, the guitarist announced that a number of guests would join him during the night, including Jennifer Hartswick, Mickey Raphael, Paul Franklin, Lamont Landers, Billy Contreras and The Honky Tonk Horns. Each of those performers showed up in force, with The Honky Tonk Horns sitting in on “Carolina Honey,” “Good Run” and “Your Favorite Band” during the group’s first set. King’s second set was an even more guest-filled affair, with his previously confirmed friends augmenting his band at various points throughout the segment. Highlights included Landers emerging for a take on Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon,” Hartswick appearing on Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free” and Raphael contributing to a handful of tunes, including Little Feat’s “Willin’.”

A few unannounced guests also emerged throughout the night. Briley King, the guitarist’s wife, sang on “Goodbye Carolina” and “Willin’” while Marvin King, the musician’s South Carolina-based father, played guitar on “Reed Door Blues.” Blackberry Smoke singer/guitarist Charlie Starr, who performs with King in the Marshall Tucker Band-associated Toy Factory Project, also made a surprise appearance at the end of the night, sitting in on King’s own “Honky Tonk Hell” and a mashup of King’s “Too Much Whiskey” and The Charlie Daniels Band’s “Trudy.” Raphael, Franklin and  Contreras also emerged for “Honky Tonk Hell” while country singer Zach Top appeared on the final selection as well.

The Marcus King Band will appear at Washington, DC’s The Anthem this Wednesday.
