The Disco Biscuits revived their longstanding tradition of performing a film score alongside the original movie on Saturday night during a March 11 stand at The Caverns in Pelham, Tenn. The ensemble projected a fan-picked flick, The Fifth Element, and jammed alongside the 1997 sci-fi cult classic during the evening’s second set.

After getting comfortable at the venue during a Friday night performance, the group followed up on Saturday with a segue-heavy first half, which began with “Why We Dance,” followed by “Freebis Slinky.” The previously mentioned song ran over into “Shocked” and “Great Abyss” prior to a set-ending rendition of “Who’s in Charge.”

With the film projected behind the band, they cut into the night’s second half, which was comprised of two stretched-out scores, including a nearly 17-minute rendition of “One Chance to Save the World.” Also included was a “Helicopters” encore to the pleasure and amusement of the audience.

Apart from Saturday night’s thematic display, The Disco Biscuits have pulled out similar cinema-infused sets in the past, such as their 1999 New Year’s Eve trial run, which featured Katuhiro Otomo’s cyber-punk anime production Akira

Following the success of their first attempt, the band continued the tradition during their 2001 Pacific Northwest Halloween jaunt, when they improvised numbers from Alice In Wonderland (on Oct. 31), It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Nov. 1), Koyaanisqatsi (Nov. 2) and Run Lola Run (Nov. 3).

Most recently, The Disco Biscuits reprised the trend at their New Year’s Eve run in 2015 when they added the score to the original 1982 cut of Tron during their third set on stage in The Big Apple.

Of note, Saturday’s set was a potential toss-up between Labyrinth, Princess Mononoke, Planet Earth, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Bladerunner. The Disco Biscuits allowed fans to vote on their favorite film and only unveiled the winner during their second set on March 11.
