Last night, Bobby Weir & The Wolf Bros kicked off their three-night run in celebration of Weir’s 75th birthday at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The performance featured the usual suspects of Weir’s pack of collaborators, along with Mattew Szemela on violin and Matthew Kelly (Kingfish, Bobby and the Midnites and RatDog) on harmonica throughout the performance.
The ensemble kicked off their performance with a fitting “The Music Never Stopped” into Rob Wasserman’s “Easy Answers.” that was fitted with a reprise of “The Music Never Stops” before melding into “Bertha.” Next came a pair of covers: Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and Jerry Garcia’s “Loser.” Weir then tapped into his work with Kelly with a cover of Ratdog’s “She Says” before closing the first set with “Throwing Stones.”
Weir & Wolf Bros kicked off their second set with a cover of Little Feat’s fan favorite “Easy to Slip.” They then moved into a paring of Weir & Wassman’s “The Winners” into “Althea” and then played Weir’s song “Greatest Story Ever Told.” After Weir’s original, the ensembles performed an extended jam comprised of “Scarlet Begonias” into “Uncle John’s Band” into Kingfish’s “Supplication” into a reprise of “Uncle Johns Band” into Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and finally a cover The Young Rascals’ “Good Lovin’” to close the set.
