Today, New Riders of the Purple Sage have announced the forthcoming release of their new live album, Lyceum ‘72. The album will drop on Sept. 23 via Omnivore Recordings and features the psychedelic rock troupe’s appearance with the Grateful Dead during the legendary May 26, 1972 concert at the Lyceum Theatre in London.
In a press release, the band shared some context behind the performance: “The last night of the Grateful Dead’s 1972 European tour was memorable for a host of reasons, and prime amongst them, was the fun fact that the whole extended musical ‘family’ of the Grateful Dead was reunited at the London gig in the Lyceum Ballroom just off the Strand….”
New Riders of the Purple Sage’s Lyceum ‘72 was recorded on a 16-track machine by notable Grateful Dead engineers Betty Cantor, Janet Furman, Bob Matthews, Rosie McGee and Wizard–the team which also recorded the Grateful Dead’s Europe ‘72 Performance. Moreover, Lyceum ‘72 was mixed by the current Grateful Dead sound engineer, Jeffery Norman, as well as mastered by David Glasser, to present fans and listeners with material from the memorable date.
Additionally, the Lyceum ‘72 release comes with linear notes as a pairing to the exceptional listening experience, that were written by Sam Cutler, the one-time touring manager for the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones and New Riders of the Purple Sage. The new album was produced for release by Rob Bleetstein, New Riders of the Purple Sage archivist, Sirius/XM producer and host on the Grateful Dead channel.
Lyceum ‘72 is available on CD and Digital with packaging containing memories from the band’s manager and photographs. Pre-order the live album here.
