John Mayer has shared a brand new music video for his Sob Rock cut “Wild Blue.”

The easy-listening tune appears mid-way through Sob Rock, and the video echoes Mayer’s commitment to the ’80s, pseudo-Steve Winwood aesthetic he’s been pushing through this album cycle.

Director Matthew Cullen has described the video as “a four-minute meme-energy dreamscape escape,” noting that he and Mayer “wanted to create a music video meditation that felt at home on your 4×3 television, at a time when MTV was a wild west experimental space and visual effects were fearlessly made on a computer the size of a house. While producing it, I tried to make sure the compositing and computer graphics were polished to 1989 standards. We had a lot of inspiration, but most of all, Tears for Fears ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ and ‘The Mind’s Eye’ on VHS (a considerable influence on me). I wasn’t old enough to direct videos during this era, but thanks to this video, I got a bit of wish fulfillment.”

Currently, Mayer is on tour with Dead & Company performing a full summer tour and two weekends in Mexico.
