Once again, Govt Mule celebrated New Years Eve with a multi-night run at New Yorks Beacon Theater. In addition to two solid sets from Govt Mule on both Thursday and Friday, Warren Haynes and company also offered a special elongated show on New Years Eve, with Ron Holloway’s Holographic Horns and Late Night guitarist Jimmy Vivino fleshing out the groups second set. Beginning with the theme for the Blues Brothers movie, the horn section ran through a breadth of material including Mule chestnuts like Down and Out in New York City, as well as an extended Thelonius Beck interlude. Additional theatrics ensued at the end of the groups first and second sets when keyboardist Danny Louis picked up a guitar for Train Kept A Rollin’ and Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. Vivino reappeared during Govt Mules third and final set, adding guitar to numbers like Beautifully Broken, Effigy, Folsom Prison Blues and That’s What Love Will Make You Do. On the latter number, Ron Holloway’s Holographic Horns also added extra zest. Holloway then helped Govt Mule close out its set with a rendition of its own Blind Man In The Dark. Govt Mules encores were also loaded with special guests. First, Hook Harrera and Alvin Youngblood Hart, who both made a surprise appearance a night earlier on a all-star version of Long Distance Call, appeared on Hurts Me Too. After a quick break, Govt Mule returned with Ron Holloway’s Holographic Horns and Vivino on keys for a show closing version of Haynes anthem, Soulshine. Also of note, on Thursday Govt Mule covered Miles Davis Johnny Bratton, a rare number only available on the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions.
