Last evening at the Grammy Awards, following an all-star tribute-medley to the music of Sly Stone featuring Robert Randolph, Steven Tyler, Will.i.am, Maroon 5, and John Legend, a Mohawked Stone made a brief return to the stage, his first high-profile public performance in over a decade. Stone appeared on keys for a few verses of ‘I Want to Take You Higher’ (last year he put in a cameo appearance with his sister Vaettas Family Stone tribute band at a Los Angeles club). As for the awards, the Del McCoury Bands The Company We Keep earned the group its first-ever Grammy as Best Bluegrass Album. Other winners included 90 year old Les Paul, who took home Best Pop Instrumental Performance (Caravan) and Best Rock Instrumental Performance (69 Freedom Special) along with 80 year old B.B. King who won Best Traditional Blues Album for 80. In addition, Sonny Rollins earned the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo Grammy for Why Was I Born from Without A Song – The 9/11 Concert, Pat Metheny Groups _ The Way Up_ received Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Tim O’Briens _ Fiddler’s Green_ received Best Traditional Folk Album and Martin Scorseses Bob Dylan Documentary, No Direction Home was honored as Best Long Form Music Video.
