Beirut frontman Zach Condon has shared a new note on his band’s website detailing the creation of their new album, titled Gallipoli, and the various inspirations and writing and recording locations involved in the process.

Condon explains that the old Farfisa organ that fueled the writing of Beirut’s first two albums came back into play for this one, as did Condon’s frequent trips to Berlin, where he eventually settled down and wrote much of Gallipoli. The title of the album was taken from Condon and a few bandmates’ October 2017 trip to the Italian city of the same name, when they encountered a brass band procession, inspiring Condon into a day-long writing and recording session to complete the title track.

“It felt to me like a cathartic mix of all the old and new records and seemed to return me to the old joys of music as a visceral experience,” Condon writes. “This seemed to be the guiding logic behind much of the album, of which I only realized fully at that point. We spent the rest of the month in the studio in Italy, eventually finishing the bulk of the album by November.”
