Though they’ve made but two studio albums, it’s not too soon for I’m With Her’s first in-concert collection.
In fact, Sing Me Alive, recorded on the trio’s 2025 tour in support of Wild and Clear and Blue, might be overdue. For hearing Sara Watkins, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz unadorned with slight imperfections – Watkins’ cracking voice, O’Donovan’s exuberance and Jarosz’s … well Jarosz is pretty much perfect always – humanizes this band and nearly captures the goosebump-and-chills effect of I’m With Her in person.
Across 20 songs culled from 2018’s See You Around and W&C&B; plus non-album singles like “Call My Name” and “Crossing Muddy Waters;” and previously unrecorded takes on the traditional “Lord Lead Me On” and Paul Simon’s “Obvious Child,” I’m With Her leave the audience toggling between stunned silence and explosive excitement as the trio members sing in familial harmony and play with commanding dominance that renders drums and bass unnecessary.
This is most evident on “Ancient Light” and the aforementioned Simon cover as O’Donovan and Jarosz employ muted guitar strings as percussion to dazzling effect.
Ye Vagabonds guest on “Rhododendron.” And while the male voices offer nice complement, they’re not necessary as I’m With Her are as strong a vocal band that’s ever existed.
Add in O’Donovan’s Joni Mitchell-inspired guitar work; Watkins’ fiddle, guitar and ukulele; and Jarosz’s virtuosic banjo, mandolin, octave mandolin and guitar and there’s a magic that’s rarely been matched by any band of any genre. The expertly recorded Sing Me Alive does as good a job of capturing said magic as any live album could.
