In the world of jam things ebb and flow. The next burst of fans is one nascent jamband away from blowing up the scene again and giving us a whole new crop of musicians to follow. The rise of Goose brought new attention to the genre and Phish continues to defy the imagination with epic productions. Though it all moe. has remained stalwart and dedicated to the music that made them so revered through the decades. Now after years of hardships and physical ailments sidelining members this band is back and melting faces like never before. It would appear that moe. is in a renaissance.

moe. announced two nights at The Ogden in April and Front Range locals quickly made plans for the run. The Ogden is a decent enough room but sightline can be an issue for people who arrive late. If this is you just go to the floor and make do. I met my wife at a moe. show at The Fillmore about two blocks away in 2009. We’ve been seeing this band together ever since! We parked just around the corner and got in quickly just before 8 PM. moe. took the stage soon after and let us know they would not be messing around by starting with a classic “Don’t Fuck With Flo that featured fluted “Moondance” teases and marimba flourishes. We were treated to a cool drink of “Water” complete with the blue lights. Speaking of which they utilized several LED panels scattered around the stage and as their backdrop which made for some interesting effects. They wasted no time by intricately segueing into the tight instrumental “Hector’s Pillow” before launching off into “Hi & Lo.” The jam heavy version of JJ Cale’s “Cajun Moon” was an unexpected highlight. They kept it heady with the fan favorite, “Jazz Wank,” which gave way to the opening notes of “Buster.” The band pulled a fast one by choosing to rip into a set closing “Plane Crash” and not the aforementioned flying pig.

moe. took the full half hour set break and returned with a punchy “Farmer Ben.” I appreciate whenever Jim gets his dues on the mic. “Yellow Tigers” sounds like you tossed your five favorite classic rock tunes into a blender and said make it about tigers. I will say with Nate on vocals on this one, it has a distinct and lovely vibe.  With “George” clocking in at 19:30 and “Recreational Chemistry” hitting nearly 24 minutes, these two songs were the bulk of the second set. For those that claim to love jam music maybe circle back on moe. There aren’t many bands still ripping a pair of 20-minute jams back-to-back these days. It’s rare and it’s fun. They closed the second set with another off their latest album, “Giants” is a new vehicle for moe. to go from 0 to 100.

The Boys from Buffalo came back for a two song encore starting with a perfect rendition of The Faces “Oh La La.” I too sometimes wish that I knew what I knew now when I was younger. They shut it all down with a smoky “Mar De Mar.” It’s still stunning to see this band cranking on all cylinders. They are continuing to innovate and now Nate has a few years under his belt giving him even more chances to insert his creativity into the group. They have an extensive summer tour planned as well as numerous festival stops. Get out and see them, they still crush.
