For those new to Tedeschi Trucks Band, the big-band rock ensemble’s sixth and latest studio set may be the perfect album to play catch-up, to align past and present. This 11-song collection codifies the sound of this ultra-talented group in 2026, bringing together a host of familiar influences, introducing some new ones, and suggesting more to come. Never shy to embrace rock, blues, roots, jazz, soul, Americana, and gospel, this current incarnation of TTB—walking as a unified front a dozen strong in the album’s gatefold center spread—is here as concentrated and concise as ever.
Tedeschi Trucks Band is and always has been a total greater than the sum of its parts. It starts with its namesakes, and once again Susan Tedeschi’s dark-honey voice and stinging guitar coupled with husband Derek Trucks’ ever-vibrant and inventive, virtuosic guitar-work are front and center. Additionally, there is the foundational egalitarian ethos, happy to shine on singer Mike Mattison and keyboardist Gabe Dixon as key contributors in songwriting and performance. Not to mention the dual drumming engine, bedrock bass, and sterling horn and vocal sections.
Co-produced by Trucks and Mike Elizondo, where this LP shows its evolution from the five previous studio efforts is in its sensibility. The best example comes in the sweetened pop overtones of “I Got You,” bouncing along on a brass backing line and infectious doo-doo-doos. Never before has TTB sounded as breezy. Or, as on “Hero,” so cyclonic and menacing.
Still, there are signposts of the TTB that first carved this path over a decade ago. “Who Am I” plays like the sibling of “Midnight in Harlem,” the beautifully delivered standout from the band’s Revelator debut back in 2011. And “Shout Out” could just as easily slotted into this record’s predecessor- the four-part epic, I Am The Moon. Too, there is the elegant simplicity of “What In The World” that TTB has turned into somewhat of a trademark; especially impressive for a unit that can get down in the swamp, as on “Crazy Cryin’” or on the titular track.
Perhaps less exotic, less searching than on previous outings, Future Soul is Tedeschi Trucks Band sewing together the myriad threads and colors of its sonic superhero gear, saving the world one sizzling and succinct note at a time.
