Chris Benchetler’s Mountains of the Moon is a feast for the eyes and the ears. It’s inspired by the world of extreme sports and set to the music of the Grateful Dead. As the film’s description notes, “Captured almost entirely at night using cutting-edge cinematography, lasers, animation, and projection mapping, the film leads viewers on a surreal journey through ocean, river, and mountain landscapes. The world’s greatest athletes, adventurers, and thinkers appear as luminous figures, navigating through the natural world.”

Benchetler has said of the film, “Mountains of the Moon is an artistic journey where light became my paintbrush and the Earth our canvas. By breaking free of the sun’s constraints, we were able to sculpt emotion, energy, and movement, juxtaposed into the landscape—layering sport, art, music, and nature to create something that speaks beyond words and more into feeling.”

Two special screenings will take place on October 1 and 2 at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco. On both of these evenings The Terrapin Family Band and special guest Eric Krasno will be on hand to deliver a live score. In addition, following the film, the musicians will then offer a complete second set.
