Last night, Marc Maron led a stacked cast of comedians in a benefit show for the Divided Sky Foundation at Los Angeles’ Largo at the Coronet. Before a program that featured sets from Maron, Sarah Silverman, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney to support the nonprofit organization’s addiction counseling resources and residential recovery program, Divided Sky founder Trey Anastasio delivered a surprise solo acoustic set.
After a quick introduction from Maron, Anastasio set off the evening’s festivities with the Hoist classic “Sample in a Jar,” then invited some audience participation by letting the crowd carry a line in “Limb By Limb.” The tight half-hour set for the 260-person capacity comedy club continued with “Lost in the Pack,” grooving and riotous renditions of “Wolfman’s Brother” and “Bathtub Gin” and a high-flying medley of “Chalk Dust Torture” and “Back on the Train” before a grand finale of “More.”
Anastasio’s intimate show could be seen as a warm-up of sorts for his upcoming acoustic tour, crossing the country with 15 stripped-back performances supported by pianist and longtime collaborator Jeff Tanski from May 26 to June 24. The imminent outing will build on last year’s celebrated run, which marked his first proper acoustic tour in six years and was chronicled on a live album, Trey Anastasio – Live and Acoustic, last Friday.
