Old Crow Medicine Show spent Saturday, August 1, at Jerry Garcia’s onetime stomping grounds, Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre, and marked the occasion by dotting their setlist with both expected and unexpected tributes to the Grateful Dead guitarist.

Just four songs into their extended set, Old Crow busted into their frequent cover of “C.C. Rider,” a blues number the Dead picked up in 1979. Soon after, the roots group moved into Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again,” which the Dead played 70 times between 1988-1995, and the traditional “On the Road Again,” which Garcia performed with Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions in his early days and with the Dead in both 1966 and the 1980s.

Returning to the string-music theme, after “On the Road Again,” Old Crow ran through back-to-back renditions of the traditional “I’ve Been All Around This World,” which Garcia played with both the Dead and his solo projects at various points from the ’60s-’90s and another song that frequently surfaced when Garcia played in an acoustic format at different points in his career, Jesse Fueller’s “Monkey And The Engineer.”

From there, Old Crow introduced a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” a Dead standard beginning in 1969, and the Garcia/Robert Hunter original “U.S. Blues,” which Old Crow began covering in 2008. They then closed the main portion of their set with their signature sing-along, “Wagon Wheel.”
