Bill Frisell has announced his fifth Blue Note album, In My Dreams. Set to release on Feb. 27, the celebrated jazz guitarist’s next project assembles a supergroup of his longtime collaborators, with Jenny Scheinman on violin, Eyvind Kang on viola, Hank Roberts on cello, Thomas Morgan on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. Frisell’s new ensemble taps into decades of chemistry to weave together jazz and Americana in transportive hybrid live cuts, as heard on the advance title track.
Frisell’s sextet combines his trio with Morgan and Royston, as heard on 2020’s Valentine, with his go-to string section, who first convened for 2005’s Richter 858, but that formulation belies the way the six players have crossed paths in several bold projects and configurations for decades. “Throughout all these years, this group has just been sort of popping up as my guys, you know?” Frisell says, “I’ve spent so much time with these folks. Traveled many miles. But that doesn’t mean we’re done. We’re just getting started.”
Frisell will celebrate his new record and his 75th birthday with a series of special concerts across the country through the spring. The guitarist and his band will set off an 11-show run with twonights at the new Blue Note Los Angeles on March 4 and 5, then make stops in Sa Francisco, Portland, Ore., Seattle, Denver, Kansas City, Mo. and Tulsa, Okla. before a double-header in the Appel Room at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center on March 27 and 28 and a grand finale at Sellersville, Pa.’s Sellersville Theatre on March 29.
