My Morning Jacket returned to the stage last night, Oct. 8, to set off the final leg of their 2025 is Tour with a performance at Washington, D.C.’s The Anthem. After a month off the road in the wake of an eventful West Coast leg, and the formal 20th anniversary celebration of Z, the roots-rock powerhouse stormed the spotlight with renewed energy and sustained focus. In the evening’s encore, the band forecasted more highlights in the shows ahead with an unexpected resurrection of “Hillside Song.”
After an opening set from Colombian psychadelia trio BALTHVS, My Morning Jacket set off their performance on Wednesday night with frontman Jim James’ 2013 original “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” This tender, slow-burning introduction took a hard left turn as the quintet launched “Squid Ink,” the hard-hitting rock chimera that has quickly emerged as the most reliable jam vehicle of their recently released 10th studio album, is. In the remainder of the 21-track show, the band offered only three further entries from their latest record, marking the set’s midpoint with “Everyday Magic” and “I Can Hear Your Love” and building momentum into their finale with a heavy “Die for It.”
In place of their new material, My Morning Jacket packed their East Coast and Midwest series kickoff with every era of their expansive catalog, representing all ten of their albums with key cuts like “Circuital,” “Evil Urges,” “Wordless Chorus,” “The Bear” and a set-closer of “One Big Holiday.” After a roaring reception, the band returned for an encore with The Waterfall’s “Hillside Song,” delivered for the sixth time to date and first since November 2015. Following this surprise fan service, the quintet tore through “Slow Slow Tune,” “Off the Record” and a grand finale of “Phone Went West.”
My Morning Jacket will perform next at Philadelphia’s Metropolitan Opera House with two shows on Oct. 10 and 1. The band will continue with 13 further dates before wrapping up a long year of touring in Atlanta on Nov. 1. Find tickets and more information at mymorningjacket.com/tour.
