Newport Folk Festival will return to its longtime home of Newport, R.I.’s Fort Adams State Park from July 25-27, bringing with it an unparalleled assembly of the most acclaimed and accomplished performers in traditional American music and its many stylistic descendents. As its 66th annual staging rapidly approaches, the festival has announced two additional programs to amplify excitement and raise funds for the Newport Festivals Foundation.
In keeping with its longstanding tradition, the Newport Folk Festival has planned five late-night performances at venues throughout the city to extend the celebration into the evening. On Thursday, July 24, Geese will host Extra Innings at Newport Blues Cafe. Friday will bring performances from Matthew Logan Vasquez and Snacktime at Newport Blues Cafe, The Deslondes and Langhorne Slim at Parlor Bar & Kitchen and Friends of New Time Music, produced by Brad Cook, at The Jane Pickens Theater. Finally, on Saturday, Chaparelle and Hayes Carll will perform at Parlor Bar & Kitchen and James Austin Johnson will bring The Old Country Goodtime to The Jane Pickens Theater. Tickets for all aftershow benefits will go on sale next Wednesday, July 2, at 1 p.m ET.
On Thursday, July 24, Newport Folk Festival will make history with the first-ever Newport Folk All-Star Game. At Newport’s Cardine Field, the festival will welcome two teams of the weekend’s performers to face off in a softball game supporting the Newport Festivals Foundation’s free music lessons program. While the players have not been announced, they’ll join Team Morby and Team Goodman, presumably helmed by Kevin Morby and S.G. Goodman. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, July 2, at 1 p.m. ET, with remaining tickets to be available on the day of the game at the field.
