Last night, Trey Anastasio touched down in Rochester, N.Y. for the fourth performance of his 2025 solo acoustic tour. At the Eastman School of Music’s historic Kodak Hall, the iconic Phish frontman continued the thrills of his series so far with another batch of bust-outs and rarities, including two coveted first-time solo stagings.
Anastasio kicked off his set with a long-awaited first public performance of “Just a Touch,” his instantly beloved opener from the eighth and final night of 2020’s Beacon Jams. Now pared back from his full TAB ensemble to a stirring solo rendition, Anastasio dedicated the long-awaited live debut to James Casey, the late TAB saxophonist and dearly departed icon of the jam world. From this powerful first cut, the artist raced through a rapid rotation of 14 solo acoustic songs; highlights among the bunch included solo bust-outs of “NICU,” “Evening Song” (last presented by Phish in July 2023), “Farmhouse,” “Winterqueen” and “Gumbo,” all of which have been out of his independent rotation since at least 2023.
Shortly after an anthemic medley of “AC/DC Bag” and “Chalk Dust Torture,” Anastasio welcomed accompaniment from pianist and longtime collaborator Jeff Tanski, who has supported each of his 2025 solo sets so far. Tanski lent his talents to “It’s Ice,” the Rift select last offered without the band in 2011, then supported “Bug” and “Frost” before the first acoustic performance of “Flying Blind.”
The duo closed out the main portion of the set with “What’s the Use?” and “Drift While You’re Sleeping,” then returned to the stage for an encore with Trey delivering powerful solos on “Mercy,” “Never,” “Sleep” and “All of These Dreams.” To wrap the performance on a high note, Tanski returned for exuberant duets of “You Enjoy Myself” and “Wilson.”
Anastasio’s 2025 solo tour will continue tomorrow, March 14, when the icon assumes the spotlight at Columbus, Ohio’s Mershon Auditorium. Once the lights go down, he’ll continue with 15 further acoustic evenings across the country–including such vaunted venues as New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre, Nashville, Tenn.’s Ryman Auditorium, Orlando, Fla.’s Walt Disney Theater and Red Bank, N.J.’s Count Basie Center for the Arts–through April 5.
