Sierra Hull has released “Come Out Of My Blues,” the second preview single from her eagerly anticipated fifth studio album A Tip Toe High Wire.
Hull’s latest sample of her first full-length release since 2020’s 25 Trips showcases not only her creative evolution, but also a knack for fruitful teamwork, with lyrics co-written by the acclaimed John Prine collaborator Pat McLaughlin and vocals from bluegrass icon Tim O’Brien. “Having been a John Prine fan for many years, and loving many of the songs he wrote with Pat McLaughlin throughout his career, I thought it would be fun to write with Pat,” Hull reflected on the song’s origins in a statement.
“One day I was changing mandolin strings and found myself playing around with a weird tuning and wished I had something to sing over the melody I was playing,” the artist recalled. Hull followed her inventive ear and close familiarity with bluegrass’ sonic traditions to a reworking of the song she honed from McLaughlin’s foundational idea. “With Pat’s permission, I modified our song to fit a new melody that leans into a more experimental old time sound with split-tuned mandolin and claw hammer banjo,” she detailed.
The resultant “Come Out Of My Blues” is a conversational, high-spirited celebration of a subtle but familiar feeling, when “you’re starting to come out of a period of sadness only to notice the small, beautiful things around you like birds singing.” The new song shines with harmonies from O’Brien, who light-heartedly shared, “Sierra is fleet-fingered and full throttle on this one… I kind of ducked my head down under the wind and held on.”
“Come Out Of My Blues” follows “Boom,” which arrived in January as Hull’s first original music since before the pandemic—save for singles, including irresistible covers of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” and the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” in 2024. A Tip Toe High Wire is a landmark for Hull as her first self-produced and self-released album; Hull helmed production for the project alongside longtime collaborator and engineer Shani Gandhi, and rounded out the sound with contributions from her tried and true touring quartet: guitarist Shaun Richardson, fiddler Avery Merritt, bassist Erik Coveney and percussionist Mark Raudabaugh, who took their chemistry with Hull to the studio for the first time.
“In some ways, it feels like stepping out into a different territory,” Hull reflected on her first independently published offering. “And leaning into that at this chapter of my career—the freedom of being able to be out on my own, to create with no walls for what feels like the first time—has helped me grow.”
