On February 28 a special show will take place at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, CA. “A Celebration of the Life and Music of Zakir Hussain” will honor the tabla master who passed away on December 15. The evening has been organized by Hussain’s family and 100% of the proceeds will be directed to the Zakir Hussain Institute of Music.
The roster of performers who will honor the beloved percussionist includes: Mickey Hart, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Charles Lloyd, Julian Lage, Eric Harland, Joshua Redman, Dave Holland, Marcus Gilmore, Anantha Krishnan, Harish Raghavan, Ganesh Rajagopalan, Kala Ramnath, Jayanthi Kumaresh, Third Coast Percussion w/Salar Nader, Chris Potter, David Sánchez, John Santos, Marvin Sewell, George Brooks, Steve Smith, Tabla Choir and many others.
Hussain played some notable shows at the Grace Cathedral. These include a duo performance with Joe Henderson in 1990 and a gig with Charles Lloyd in in 2001, which led to the formation of the Sangam Trio with Eric Harland.
Last February he became the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one time, for Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. In 2022 He was awarded the 2022 Kyoto Prize laureate in Arts and Philosophy, awarded by the Inamori Foundation to “those who have contributed significantly to the scientific, cultural and spiritual betterment of mankind.” Additional information on his life and legacy appears here.
