After opening their multi-night stand at Chicago’s Salt Shed on Wednesday, Sept. 11, Goose returned to the venue yesterday evening, Thursday, Sept. 12, for a follow-up, which consisted of their typical expansive two-set delivery. Setting this performance apart was the emergence of special guest Julian Lage, who added his touch to a pair of Goose originals during the latter half of the concert. Following set break, the Connecticut band cut into Peter Anspach’s Great Blue project’s “Yet” before dusting off a cover of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.”
The show picked up on the aptly titled “Mr. Action” before the second-ever cover take on Swimmer’s “Draconian Meter Maid,” a song introduced to this group by newcomer Cotter Ellis during the band’s Sept. 1 stand at PNC Bank Center in Holmdel, N.J. For the following number, the band set course a retro synth wave on “Indian River.”
Next, they welcomed Lang, who faced off with Rick Mitarotonda during the band’s frequented number “A Western Sun,” a back-and-forth that ensued during Moon Cabin originator “Turned Clouds.” Returning to the stage after the set break, Goose played a partial “Yeti,” cutting it short in favor of Foster The People’s 2010 chart-topper, “Pumped Up Kicks,” played for the first time since December 18, 2022, effectively ending a 122-show gap.
Before closing the second frame, the group jammed through “Thatch” and “Red Bird” before finding an out after “Factory Fiction.” The band returned to their positions for their encore, working through “Slow Ready.”
